Looking for the best Amazon finds for your first home? The first few weeks after we moved in, Amazon showed up at our door almost every single day. And I truly wish I kept count of how many times we ran to Lowe’s for “just one thing” that turned into five. Even as a very Type A person who loves planning, this experience reminded me that sometimes you just have to let things unfold. Not everything needs to be perfect immediately. It was also a bittersweet time, we were incredibly fortunate to have furniture from my mom that had been in storage for years. Seeing her pieces in our home brought some mixed emotions, but mostly comfort. It made our house feel like home faster than anything else could have. Here are the Amazon finds for your first home that made the biggest difference in those early days.
First Home Must Haves: The Products That Made the Biggest Difference
1. Blackout Curtains (My #1 Priority)
When we first viewed our house, I couldn’t stop staring at the beautiful, matching curtains throughout every room. They looked custom made for the house, and I was so sad to learn they were taking them.
Curtains immediately became my number one priority.
I am a terrible sleeper and cannot sleep without curtains. I originally loved the Two Pages curtain options, but I couldn’t justify the price for every window in the house.
Instead, I found beautiful oatmeal-colored blackout pleated curtains on Amazon, and they ended up being perfect.
The quality, color, and overall look exceeded my expectations. We used them on all windows downstairs windows and two of the bedrooms upstairs, including the large front windows that get intense afternoon sun.
They made everything feel cohesive, calm, and finished, which, as a Type A person, I love. We did have to shorten them slightly (thank goodness for my nana), but it was completely worth it.
I loved them so much that I bought a similar blue version for our guest bedroom and paired them with gold accents instead of black. It completely transformed the space.
Why I recommend them:
- True blackout coverage
- High-end look without the high-end price
- Neutral colors that work in any room
- Instantly make a home feel finished

2. A Dehumidifier for the Basement
This was something we didn’t fully appreciate until we moved in.
Our basement has a sump pump drain, so it was important to get a dehumidifier that could continuously drain using a hose instead of needing to be emptied constantly.
Being able to set it up and forget about it has been amazing.
It protects the space, prevents moisture buildup, and gives us peace of mind.
Once we were settled, organizing our new space became the next priority, especially the pantry
3. Double-Sided Shower Curtain Hooks (Small Upgrade, Huge Difference)
This might sound small, but it has made such a difference in everyday life.
In our apartment, washing the shower curtain was always a hassle. You had to take everything off, and the plastic liner would get tangled.
These double-sided hooks allow the decorative curtain and liner to hang separately.
They’re easier to remove, easier to clean, and they look so much nicer, especially with the gold accents in our bathrooms. Sometimes it really is the little things.

4. Dog Poop Scooper and Outdoor Waste Bin
Having a yard is amazing, but it comes with responsibility.
At our apartment, there were dog waste stations everywhere. Suddenly, we have a large yard and we are responsible for keeping our yard clean.
This scooper has been a lifesaver.
It makes cleanup fast, easy, and keeps our yard enjoyable year round. My shoes (especially my Uggs) are also very grateful, since I have a habit of not paying attention and stepping in things I shouldn’t.
Note: Ours is currently buried under a pile of snow, so no photo for now, but trust me, it gets a lot of use the rest of the year.
5. Reliable WiFi System (Essential for Working From Home)
Strong WiFi was non-negotiable since I work from home full time, if you’re setting up a home office too, check out my full work from home setup.
We added an Amazon eero system with a main router and two extenders, one in the basement and one upstairs.
It ensures strong coverage throughout the entire house, whether I’m working, my husband is home, or we’re streaming shows at night.
It’s something you don’t think about… until you don’t have it.

What I Didn’t Expect (and My Biggest Lesson)
What surprised me most wasn’t just the items we needed, it was the process itself.
For the first few weeks, Amazon showed up at our door almost every single day. No matter how much you plan, organize, and prepare, there will always be things you don’t anticipate.
As a very Type A person, this wasn’t easy for me at first. I like having a plan and knowing exactly how things will go. But moving into our home taught me that it’s okay to let things come together slowly. Not everything needs to be perfect right away.
We were also incredibly fortunate to have furniture from my mom that had been in storage for years. Seeing her pieces throughout our home was bittersweet, but it made the space feel warm, familiar, and meaningful from the very beginning. It reminded me that a home isn’t built overnight, it’s built over time with memories, comfort, and the things and people you love most.
If you’re moving into your first home, my biggest advice is this: focus on what makes your daily life easier and your space feel like yours. Start with the essentials, give yourself grace, and trust that everything else will fall into place.
